Laser Etching Plastic: High Definition Marking Solutions from Welch Plastics
In the custom plastic fabrication and plastic manufacturing industry, accuracy is key. It doesn't matter if you are making medical devices, consumer products, automotive components, or personalized signs; the ability to mark your parts with clean, readable, and permanent identification that you can't erase is essential. This is where laser etching plastic is going to change everything.
At Welch Plastics, a foremost plastic manufacturer in Las Vegas, we provide high-definition laser etching services that will enhance your branding, create traceability, maintain compliance, and do it all faster and better than anyone else.
What is Laser Etching Plastic?
Laser etching plastic is a non-contact marking process using concentrated laser energy to vaporize or chemically transform a very thin layer of plastic surface. Instead of engraving, where you carve out of the substrate, laser etching heats the surface to create permanent, high-contrast markings, including:
- Logos and branding
- Serial numbers and barcodes
- QR and traceability codes
- Regulatory identification, including UDI for medical devices
- Decorative artwork and customer text
The output is durable marks that are crisp, readable, and abrasion, chemical, and environment-resistant.
How Laser Etching Works at Welch Plastics
At Welch Plastics, we use advanced CO₂ and fiber laser systems for all forms of plastics to guarantee clear markings. The laser etching process can be broken down into the following steps:
1. Design Submission
You can submit your artwork (sound files: .AI, .DXF, .SVG, .PDF, etc.), or have one of our in-house design staff create one for you from scratch, including logos, barcodes, part numbers, and more.
2. Laser Programming
We take care of mapping the coordinates of artwork into our software, and mapping the surface geometry and type of plastic to ensure accurate and aligned results by having both programmed.
3. Surface Etching
The laser does not directly mark the material; it targets the surface of the plastic to be hit so that the laser energy, a focused beam with lots of light energy, will remove or discolor an incredibly thin layer of material. The action will take place by thermally reacting the material through either melting, ablation, or oxidation, depending on the type of plastic used and the wavelength of the laser.
4. Cooling and QC
Once the component is marked, if there are no cooling requirements and marking could incidental heat affected the component, it is then cleaned, and quality recoverable concerns are measured for precision, contrast, and consistency.
Key Benefits of Laser Etching Plastic
No matter if you are in medical, aerospace, retail, or automotive, laser etching provides you with a greater range of benefits and advantages than any other printed marking method can offer.
High Definition & Ultra-Precise
Laser etching lets you achieve micro-detailing like logos or serial numbers that can be as small as 1mm in size. You can mark QR codes, regulatory data, labels, and intricate graphics with high definition and micro detailing that you would think was computer-generated.
Permanent & Fade Resistant
Unlike labels or inks, the laser etched mark cannot smear, scratch, peel, or fade, and this remains true throughout long periods of sunlight, high heat, or exposure to chemicals.
Green & Clean
Laser etching provides little to no waste, as there is nothing else to throw out or waste. There is no ink, solvents, or consumables; laser marking is an environmentally responsible marking solution than traditional marking methods.
Uses Most Plastics
Laser markers are equipped to cut (or etch)/engrave most thermoplastics without any issues. Polycarbonate, nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), acrylic, and many more types of plastics will all likely etch with ease.
Quick and Cost-Effective
Laser etching plastic is a fast, repeatable, and scalable solution for both prototypes and full production. Rubber stamping, labeling, and pad printing will almost always be more costly over the long term for any marking you consider providing.
Industries & Applications for Plastic Laser Etching
Laser etching is a key part of many industries. Here are some examples of how our customers are using it:
🔹 Medical & Pharmaceutical
- FDA UDI compliance, surgical tool identification, and sterilization safe markings.
🔹 Consumer Products
- Brand logos on cases, caps, and packaging, product labels, and SKU codes.
🔹 Automotive & Aerospace
- VIN markings for parts traceability, safety, and compliance tags.
🔹 Retail & Custom Signage
- Point-of-sale displays, directional signs, and branded inserts.
🔹 Electronics & Appliances
- Model numbers and voltage ratings, safety warnings, and branding.
🔹 Promotional & Custom Fabrication
- Custom goods/merchandise, personalized gifts, and awards.
If it is plastic, and it needs a permanent mark, and it is going to last a long time, then laser etching is the gold standard.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can you laser etch colored plastics?
Yes! Etching on colored plastics results in marks that are high-contrast based on the base pigment that either lightens or darkens on the etched area.
Is laser etching safe for medical or food-grade applications?
Absolutely! Laser etching does not leave behind any residues and is ideal for medical devices and sterile environments.
How small can the text or design be?
We can laser etch barcodes, QR codes, and microtext down to 1mm and still be able to read them and scan them.
Will laser etching weaken the plastic?
No! Laser etching only affects the surface layer of the plastic — the plastic's mechanical properties are not compromised.
What is the turnaround time?
Typically, we will have a turnaround timeframe of 2–5 days, depending on complexity. We can expedite service upon request.

Laser etching and engraving are ways to mark the surface of a material — like plastic, metal, or wood — using a laser beam, but they’re slightly different:
- Laser engraving: The laser removes material to create a deep mark. It actually carves into the surface, making grooves you can feel. It's great for permanent, detailed designs like logos, serial numbers, or artwork.
- Laser etching: This is a type of engraving but shallower. Instead of carving deep, the laser melts the surface just a little, creating a raised or textured mark.
Both are contactless, super precise, and often used on plastic, metal, glass, and more for things like tags, awards, custom parts, signs and decorations.
